What is Inside of a Mermaid Tail?

Mermaids are amazing creatures. We love them so much that we try to be like them. We buy mermaid tails so we can swim and feel like a mermaid in the water. But what makes a mermaid tail a mermaid tail? What is inside of a mermaid tail? You can see the fabric mermaid tail that is pulled over the legs, but you don’t see what’s inside the mermaid tail. It’s what’s inside the mermaid tail that determines how good it is for swimming and how much it costs. The better the monofin, the more the mermaid tail and monofin set will cost.

Some mermaid tails only come with the fabric tail and the bottom of the mermaid tail will not hold its shape and the mermaid tail fluke (the fluke is the bottom fin portion of a mermaid tail) will be floppy fabric.

If the mermaid tail fluke has a fin shape, there is something inside the mermaid tail that is holding the fabric in that fin shape. Most often what is inside of a mermaid tail is called a monofin. A monofin is a type of swim fin that has a single blade that attaches to the swimmer’s feet. Mono means one thus the name monofin, meaning one fin for both feet.  

There are many different brands of monofins and several cheap monofins made by China companies. Many of the monofins that are sold with mermaid tails are not good for swimming.

We have tested many of the monofins that are sold on Amazon and elsewhere including the cheap China monofins and these cheap mermaid tails do not work well for swimming. One of the very popular cheap mermaid tail with a monofin we tested couldn’t be used at all for swimming and actually prevented you from swimming because of the way the monofin was designed. The cheap monofin would hold the shape of the mermaid tail fluke so would be fine for pictures but was dangerous to try to use for swimming.
